Frequently Asked Questions
What services do you offer?
Private and individualized SLP services including structured literacy intervention for children, youth, and adults.
The option of online or remote sessions serving clients within British Columbia.
Parent/caregiver training to help you help your child at home.
Consultancy for classroom teachers and early childhood educators on ways to promote language use in your classrooms.
Formal language assessments and reporting for school-aged children.
How does it work?
We start with a 15-minute phone consultation (free of charge) to determine your initial concerns and goals for therapy. If additional SLP involvement is recommended, we will schedule an in-person or virtual appointment to complete a screening and/or assessment of your targeted communication skills. At the end of the consultation, results and recommendations will be shared. A summary report can be provided for an additional fee if requested by the client..
Why work with an SLP on reading? Isn’t speech therapy just for speech sounds?
Sometimes reading struggles represent a more foundational learning difference.
SLPs have advanced training in how language develops and how difficulties with sounds, words, and meaning can impact reading, writing, and comprehension. This allows for precise, individualized instruction when reading progress has stalled.
Are you Orton-Gillingham (OG)-certified?
I do not currently hold Orton-Gillingham certification. However, my background and expertise encompass the principles of OG intervention, specifically multisensory, explicit, and structured literacy intervention. I draw from multiple structured literacy approaches according to the individual’s needs. Dyslexia can affect much more than reading and spelling, and my training can help to identify and provide strategies for those areas of need.
How much do you charge?
Standard SLP rates are $160/session. Sessions are typically 50 minutes in length.
Rate reductions are available for multiple weekly or monthly sessions.
Home visits are also available within the lower Sunshine Coast; mileage is charged at $0.65/km.
Where are you located?
Sessions can be completed in person in Roberts Creek, at your home on the lower Sunshine Coast, or online via secure platform.
How do I get started? Do I need a referral?
No referral is required for private-pay services. Contact me to arrange a consultation and discuss whether I will be a good fit for your needs.
How long will I need services?
The frequency and length of sessions is determined in consultation with the SLP. Some clients only require one or two sessions, while others attend therapy for weeks or months as needed. For those clients, weekly sessions are typical; however, more frequent sessions are often more beneficial for initial literacy intervention or for more complex issues, ideally two to three times per week.
What are your qualifications?
I hold a Masters degree in speech-language pathology and diploma in linguistics from UBC. I have pursued innumerable continuing education opportunities to further my training and expertise in various aspects of speech, language, and literacy.
As required by the Health Professions and Occupations Act (HPOA), I am a speech-language pathologist registered with the College of Health and Care Professionals of British Columbia. Any unresolved concerns can be raised directly with the College here.
Does insurance cover your fees?
Many insurance companies provide coverage up to a certain amount for registered speech-language pathology services. SLP services are also considered an eligible medical expense for income tax purposes.I do not currently offer direct billing. Receipts are provided with practitioner registration information, which can be submitted by clients to their insurance provider of choice. Are you a reading tutor?
Reading tutors and general tutors review classroom material and grade-level curriculum and are not regulated professionals. While there is an element of instruction, literacy intervention with an SLP rebuilds foundational reading skills from the ground up, using a specific, research-backed sequence — regardless of grade-level curriculum.
